Installation Arts of Honeycomb Boxes
1. The honeycomb boxes used in HULU's exhibition are designed by Meta4 Design Forum Limited, an Eco-friendly business. All of the 3,000 paper bricks were made of recycled paper and there was no color treatment on the recycled boxes. Since the beginning of our concept we were aware of the environmental issues, and made a great effort to be environmentally friendly.
2. This installation is not a one-day affair. HULU's exhibition period lasts for 60 days. HULU needed a sturdy and reliable material to last for two months, and HULU believes that the honeycomb boxes were fully utilized.
3. HULU will reuse the honeycomb boxes for several exhibitions. These installations include secondary schools, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and HULU's upcoming exhibition of Yau Ma Tei, supported by WKCDA and ADC. In fact, HULU's upcoming exhibition space is over 10,000 square feet of open space on Shanghai Street and Kansu Street. So, we can reuse the honeycomb boxes as they remain in good condition. HULU's upcoming exhibition at Yau Ma Tei will last for 30 days, one month from Dec to Jan. We are happy to re-use the material for another exhibition period.
4. HULU has a good network with many design, arts and culture groups. These groups have showed great interest in reusing our honeycomb boxes for their future exhibitions.
5. These honeycomb boxes can be reused in related events several times because the paper design is so flexible. They can be installed in different forms for different uses in different exhibitions. We believe that it is not environmentally unfriendly to use the boxes because they are already recycled and will be used many many more times.
6. For the honeycomb boxes that are in poor condition and cannot be reused, we have found a use. We lined up several poor elderly people in the community to take the boxes and bring them to the recycle shops, which will help them earn their living. Giving the boxes away also benefits the impoverished groups in the community; it is very friendly to the disadvantaged groups in this community. Moreover, our contractor transported the honeycomb boxes that were in poor condition to Kwung Tong recycling paper company on 31 July. All of the honeycomb boxes in poor condition will be recycled.
7. HULU has launched several big exhibitions since 2009. We promote heritage, arts, culture and sustainable development for communities. So, when we use the materials for our exhibition set-up, we always consider the environmental friendly issues and the benefit to the neighbourhood.
