Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate, constructed in October, 1977, was built and managed by the Hong Kong
Housing Authority. In 1972, under the former Resettlement Department’s housing redevelopment scheme
in Shek Kip Mei, residences and factories in the area were set apart, and a new factory estate was built
to create a better operating environment for re-housing commercial units, cottage factories and other
industrial workshops in the district.
Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate is Hong Kong’s first non-standardised factory building in terms of design, which
had taken into consideration its sloping landscape and practical needs. The building’s foot-print is roughly
rectangular and is nine-storied, with all units being connected by flanking outer corridors. There are several
elevators, with the atrium being used as a loading dock which can accommodate even large trucks.
